Uncovering Historic Research Training

Discover our top tips for carrying out successful historic research and explore a wide range of online tools and how to use them. You will also hear about some case studies and have a chance to share your experiences to help you build a successful project.

This training is split into four pick’n’mix modules.

Module 1: Getting started on your local history research project

In this module we look at the ‘life cycle’ of a research project and what to expect in each stage. In particular we will think about:

  • How to get a heritage research project kick started
  • The ingredients to a successful approach
  • Some of the challenges of carrying out a research project and how to problem solve these
  • How to share and communicate your research findings

Module 2: Resources and tools for your local history research project

We will look at the tools and resources you could use as a starting point for your research project and provide hints for taking your research further. In particular we will think about:

  • The sources and resources found at local archives
  • Online research tools and how to navigate them effectively
  • How to search online and in-person
  • Top tips for visiting archives

Module 3: Have a go! Using online research resources

This session will concentrate on putting your new found knowledge about online research tools into practice, by carrying out some research micro tasks through guided activities from the comfort of your own computer. In particular we will think about:

  • The availability heritage research tools and how to navigate them effectively
  • The strengths and weaknesses of online tools
  • Framing effective searches and logging information collated

Module 4: Heritage research & real-world applications

This session will look at some of the outcomes of carrying out research in the real world, including how it can improve and enhance our understanding of the significance of sites and places and how they can be managed.

It will include some insights into how research can inform planning decisions, as well as signposting some national initiatives, including Historic England’s Enriching the List campaign.

Course Structure

This training is available as an online modules with breaks, a half or full day session ‘in person’ event. We can come to you, or arrange a venue as part of our training offer.
