TDR Heritage are delivering an in-person course over two days in May 2025. The venue is to be confirmed but will be in the West Midlands.
This new course is being designed by Vicky Hunns (historic building conservation specialist) and Gwendolen Powell (community engagement specialist) who have many combined years of experience of putting together successful applications for funding area-based regeneration schemes across the UK, as well as of delivering and evaluating them.
Course Outline and Structure
Using a combination of group learning and tasks to ‘put it into practice’, we will cover the following key areas:
1. ‘Heritage Need’
What and where: Firstly we will look at how to identify the issues facing an area and your priorities for conservation and regeneration in it. This will include elements such as building condition, risk, social and economic factors and the potential impact of doing the work on the buildings, area and people in it.
2. Understanding (and developing) Interest
‘Free’ money can be hard to give away: Knowing you need a heritage-led regeneration scheme is only part of the equation. To make it work, you will also need to engage your property owners and the local community. We will look at some of the key elements you will need to have a meaningful conversations, including understanding your communities and potential barriers to engagement.
3. Creating a Realistic Plan
How will we do it? We’ll think about how you can put together an attractive and workable scheme which includes capital work and events and activities that will encourage local people to get involved in their heritage.
…and what could go wrong? Although the delivery phase of any area scheme delivery needs to be responsive to change, even at the planning stage you’ll need to consider what is ‘likely’ to happen and the possible risks involved. We will cover the type of issues that might impact on your project and how to inject a healthy dose of realism and flexibility into your plans.
4. Evaluating your progress
How is it going? – what can be improved? How you reflect on what you are achieving should be something integrated into a project from the very start. We will think about how having to monitor and report on your progress will affect your aims and objectives at the outset, and how you can learn from this process of evaluation to think about what would work better – either to adapt your approach or do it differently next time!

The cost of the two-day course is £500 + VAT. Lunch, teas and coffees will be provided.
